What Does +0.50mm on a Piston Mean?

Ever wondered what the “+0.50mm” marking on a piston actually means?

Here is the quick engine rebuild explanation.

When an engine has high mileage or cylinder damage, the cylinder walls may develop:

⚠️ Wear
⚠️ Scoring marks
⚠️ Taper
⚠️ Out-of-round conditions

Installing a standard (STD) piston after machining may not provide the correct fit or compression.

That’s when Oversized Pistons are used.

🔩 STD Piston

Factory original piston size designed for the original cylinder bore.

🔩 +0.50mm Oversized Piston

A piston that is 0.50mm larger than the standard size. (If you're rebuilding a Land Rover/Jaguar 3.0T engine, you can check our +0.5mm Oversized Pistons Set For 306PS Engines)

Before installation:

✔ Cylinder block must be professionally bored and honed
✔ Cylinder diameter must match the oversized piston specification
✔ Correct piston-to-cylinder clearance must be measured

⚠️ Never install an oversized piston into a standard cylinder bore.

A proper engine rebuild requires:

✔ Accurate measurement
✔ Correct machining
✔ The right piston size
